The Missing Murder Clue by Clue

How to Play: Clue by Clue is a game that tests your thinking skills. It can be played alone or in a group. Solve the mystery below by going through the clues one at a time. Each time you reveal a new clue, stop and think about what it could mean, what you know from all the clues so far, and what you still need to know. After the last clue is revealed, you can read some hints or go straight to the solution!

The Situation

A night cleaner at an office building hears a noise in the basement. He goes to investigate and sees two men: one in a suit and one in jeans and a T-shirt. They are both carrying briefcases. The man in the suit tells the other man, “When he gets here, we each give him half the money.” Suddenly, a police officer comes in. The policeman and one of the men in a suit shoot each other. The third man runs off.

The cleaner runs to call police and goes back to the basement. When he gets back, there is nothing there: no bodies, no blood, and no sign of anything unusual. What happened?

Can you figure it out in 10 clues?

Clue 1

The only thing out of place in the basement was that the door had been forced open from the outside.

Clue 2

By talking to witnesses who saw him running, police were able to trace the third man to his home.

Clue 3

He told police he had met the man in the suit a few weeks ago. The man in the suit offered to partner with him to buy illegal diamonds for a low price and sell them later.

Clue 4

Both the third man and the main in the suit were putting in $50,000 each to buy the diamonds.

Clue 5

The third man said they would meet the diamond smuggler in the basement that night. He brought $50,000 in a briefcase and the main in the suit brought a briefcase too.

Clue 6

As soon as they got there, the policeman arrived and the man in the suit pointed his gun at the police. According to the third man, both fired at the same time. The third man panicked and ran.

Clue 7

Police showed no reports of an officer in that area, and no policemen were wounded or missing that night

Clue 8

He told police that he didn’t report the murder because he didn’t want to be arrested for diamond smuggling.

Clue 9

Police found a police uniform a suit, an empty briefcase, and a briefcase full of newspaper in a garbage can at the train station. There were no signs of blood on anything in the garbage can.

Clue 10

The third man confirmed that the empty briefcase was his and the one full of paper looked like the briefcase of the man in the suit.
