Solution to The Missing Murder Clue by Clue

The whole situation was a con. The man in the suit and the man pretending to be a police officer were working together to steal $50,000 from the third man. They invented the story about the diamond smuggler, led him to an empty basement, and staged a fake double murder. They knew the man wouldn’t go to police to confess his involvement in buying diamonds illegally. When the third man ran away, the other two took the briefcase with his money, went to the train station, changed clothes and got on a train to another town.
